Ask Rhode Islanders how they shop for health insurance

HealthSource RI, Rhode Island’s health insurance exchange, created new opportunities for Rhode Islanders to compare and purchase health insurance. To gauge the needs and preferences of HealthSource RI’s potential customers, The MHC group conducted and analyzed the results of 12 listening sessions with residents across the state.

Participants included farmers, artists, bus drivers, unemployed Rhode Islanders, nannies and college students.

HealthSource RI used the results of the listening sessions to shape outreach efforts, alter the design of its online application, and set priorities for future technology changes.

Assess the health of all Rhode Islanders

Rhode Island is devoted to developing a collaborative and thorough approach to improving the health of all of its residents. But before the state could create this plan, it needed a comprehensive overview of Rhode Island’s current health needs.

Over the course of a year and a half, The MHC Group contributed project management, writing, and editing support for the Rhode Island State Health Improvement Assessment Report, which gathered and analyzed the most recent data about the state’s overarching physical and behavioral health burdens.

The MHC Group worked with a range of state agencies and other partners to create this nearly 150-page analysis of state population health data.

Neurostories Podcast

Obstetricians treat pregnant women. Neurologists treat chronic migraines. But who treats pregnant women with chronic migraines? The answer is often unclear.

To address this gap in medical knowledge, The MHC group helped Rhode Island Hospital Neurologist Dr. Julie Roth make a series of podcasts.

“The Push,” uses patient stories and interviews with experts to describe the treatment options for pregnant women with epilepsy, chronic migraine, stroke and other neurological issues.

Turn academic lectures into online courses

Systematic reviews answer important questions by finding, combining and analyzing all existing evidence about a particular topic.

This kind of research could be useful to all sorts of people, including lawmakers, journalists, and advocacy groups, but it’s rare that these audiences know about systematic reviews, much less how to use them.

The MHC Group has been working with the Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health (CESH) to change that, by creating free, open access, online courses for anyone who wants to learn more about evidence synthesis and systematic reviews. So far, the team has developed seven courses, available at EvsynthAcademy.org.

Create a how to guide for making podcasts

After listening to your favorite podcasts for years, have you ever had the desire to make one yourself?

The MHC Group wrote this handbook with Neurologist Julie Roth to help health care professionals make podcasts, but most of the advice is general enough for any aspiring podcaster.

Use this guide to learn about recording gear, interview techniques and how to release your podcast into the world. Download a version here: Podcasting for Medical Education: A how to guide.

The team at Brown University’s Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health (CESH) gathers and analyzes existing research to answer important health questions. It can take months to conduct these systematic reviews. How to describe this work in under four minutes? With an animated video.

The MHC Group partnered with Motion Morsels to create “The Steps of a Systematic Review,” a three-and-a-half-minute explainer video. Motion Morsels created the beautiful animation and The MHC Group wrote the animation script, oversaw the review process and recorded the final narration.

Talk to small group doctors about Patient Centered Medical Homes

The Rhode Island Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner (OHIC) is committed to increasing the number of physician practices that become Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMHs). Patient Centered Medical Homes use patient data and a team approach to encourage preventive care and manage patients with chronic health conditions.

OHIC is particularly interested in how to motivate small group physician practices to become PCHMs.

The MHC Group worked with The Providence Plan to develop and facilitate three focus groups with Rhode Island physicians from small group practices and presented the results to OHIC’s Care Transformation Advisory Committee in October of 2015.
